May 26, 2021

Touro Law Center Dean Elena B. Langan is pleased to announce that four first-year students have been selected for the Long Island Legal Diversity Fellowship Program (LILDFP) offered through the Nassau County Bar Association. Congratulations to Vinicio Cabrera, Angeliza Franco, Denesha Johnson, and James Matias.

Dean Elena Langan stated, “We are proud of these students and know they will gain valuable experience through the fellowships as well as exposure to the local legal communities. The program is a valuable endeavor and we are so glad to have four students selected to participate.”

Vinicio Cabrera knows that he is in control of his future and looks forward to being a member of the legal profession. He plans to practice law on Long Island and be a role model to young Latino men and women.. His fellowship placement is at Westerman Ball Ederer Miller Zucker & Sharfstein, LLP, a full-service commercial law firm with offices in Nassau County.

Angeliza Franco is a first-generation American whose parents immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic. She looks forward to a career in the law on Long Island, fueled in part by her experiences as an immigration paralegal helping Central American refugee children establish lives in the United States. She will be placed with Farrell Fritz P.C., one of the largest law firms on Long Island.

Denesha Johnson has always dreamed of becoming an attorney, inspired by trips to the local courthouse to witness justice in action in the courtroom with her mom. She is proud to be a current law student and has her sights set on a legal career on Long Island and becoming a mentor to others. Her fellowship placement is with Abrams Fensterman, a full-service law firm located in Lake Success, NY.

James Matias looks forward to a career as an attorney where he can advocate and make positive differences in the lives of others. He hopes to inspire others to set goals and follow their dreams. His fellowship placement is with Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone, LLP, a full-service law firm in Mineola, NY.

The LILDFP endeavors to increase diversity in the legal profession in Nassau and Suffolk counties by placing first-year law students from under-represented groups in positions as paid summer associates at 12 premiere Long Island firms. In addition to a paid position with a Long Island law firm, students will network with judges, bar association leaders and members, and fellow program participants to develop meaningful connections within the Nassau and Suffolk legal communities.
