ACCESS TO OTHER LAW LIBRARIES
Most area academic law libraries have regulations governing the use of their libraries by students from other schools. Law Center students wishing to obtain passes to study at other area academic law libraries should check with the Access Services Librarian in the Main Reading Room of the library to determine which schools offer visiting privileges and to request passes. If that librarian is not available, students should contact another supervisory staff member in the Public Services Department. Students should request passes in a timely manner; waiting until the last minute may cause problems. Law Center faculty wishing to visit another library should check with the Access Services Librarian or another professional librarian in the Public Services Department.

Law Center students or faculty needing to locate a specific item not available in our library may be able to visit on a one-time basis an area academic law library that has the item. Students and faculty should meet with the reference librarian on duty to obtain a "green letter" for this purpose. In addition to providing the "green letter", the reference librarian can assist with locating a library that has the needed material.

The local court libraries are open to the public, as is the law collection at Stony Brook. The Huntington Public Library has a small law collection.

COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION/RESEARCH
Computer Assisted Legal Research (CALR) and Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) are available in the library for use by appropriate groups.

LexisNexis and Westlaw may be used by Law Center students, faculty, administration and staff holding educational passwords. Both services can be accessed by the Law Center community through links on the intranet section of the library web site or through shortcuts installed on desktops. In addition, law students from other law schools may access LexisNexis and Westlaw with the educational passwords provided to them by their schools, but printing may not be permitted. Members of the bench and bar may also access these two services with their personal, firm, or judicial passwords, and members of the Friends of the Library Association who have selected the fee-based computer service as part of their membership may access Westlaw in the Main Reading Room with the assistance of a Reference Librarian. No other visitors may access LexisNexis or Westlaw.

CALI exercises are interactive, computer-based exercises used to supplement study materials. These exercises can be accessed though the library's CD-ROM collection on the school network (Library Resources program). Law Center students can also access CALI through the intranet section of the library web site or through the CALI website with a password provided by a reference librarian. Free copies of a CD-ROM version of the exercises for home use are available to Law Center students at the Reference Desk.

Library users can access the internet through any networked computer not designated for some sole use. Online databases may be accessed by Law Center students, faculty, and staff on the intranet section of the library's web site. In some instances, a reference librarian must provide passwords. A reference librarian must assist visitors with access to any available fee-based databases.

The library's CD-ROM holdings are available for general use. Some can be accessed through the network. Others are available at the Computer Station in the Main Reading Room; request the assistance of a staff member.

Library users should not attempt to use for any other purpose any computer solely dedicated to the library catalog.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Law Center students, faculty, administration, and staff needing items not available in the library may request that the library attempt to borrow the materials on interlibrary loan. Forms for this purpose are available at the Circulation and Reference Desks and in the forms section of the intranet section of the library web site. A reference librarian should be consulted before completing the form.

REFERENCE
The reference librarians assist library users to locate and use appropriate research materials, and help with interlibrary loan requests and computer-assisted research.
