| The Scholars' Collection, intended to preserve and make available to researchers the rare books and other unique items collected by the library, consists primarily of British and American legal materials from the 16th through 19th centuries. The foundation of the collection, a donation of more than 600 volumes from the New York Law Institute, includes items dating back as far as the mid1500's. One of the earlier titles is a 1569 edition of Bracton's De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae. Some items in the collection have added interest because of prior ownership; for instance, several titles were owned by the historian Peter Jay, son of Chief Justice John Jay. Additions to the collection continue to be made by purchase or donation.
Because the materials in the
Scholar’s Collection are rare and often fragile, they are stored
in a secure, climate-controlled area. Requests to use items
should be addressed to the Library Director.
