Finishing Touches
Surface errors will make your reader’s heart sink.
Here are three proof-reading and copy-editing tips.
- Read your work out loud. Read slowly, looking and
listening for awkward spots or mistakes.
- Take an index card or a legal envelope to
"underline" each sentence. Read your work
again, line by line, to find typos.
- Use the "refrigerator" technique: let your
work cool off overnight. If you don’t have that much
time, take your work to a different room and read it
again—one more time—before you submit it. See how
many corrections you can still make!
