STYLE TIPS: To make your reader's work easier, use transitional words and phrases. These words and phrases guide your reader through your work, showing your reader how to follow your argument.

The following transitional words and/or phrases indicate cause and effect, comparison, and/or contrast.

CAUSE AND EFFECT:

  • Because
  • So that
  • Then
  • Consequently
  • Thus
  • Since
  • For the reason
  • As a result

COMPARISON:

  • Similarly
  • In comparison
  • Likewise
  • At the same time
  • In a similar manner

CONTRAST:

  • Nevertheless
  • However
  • Yet
  • Conversely

Adverbs and adjectives weaken your writing. Avoid them!
