THE CHINA EXPERIENCE

Packing & Behavior Advice

  1. Nicotine and alcohol are the only drugs you should consider importing or indulging in while in China, other than prescribed medications for which you have records.  China executes drug traffickers.
  2. Save space and weight for books.  It will be quite warm during the program’s segments and attractive clothes will be available for attractive prices.  Pack light and add to your wardrobe in China.  Everyone should have at least one non-jeans, non-shorts outfit for such occasions as court visits or visits to offices.  (Suits are not required, but are not discouraged.)
  3. You will be expected to buy and bring books for your courses – and books for your leisure time.  Course texts can be ordered through Touro’s bookstore beginning May 1.
  4. Chinese dress varies considerably, but it tends to be conservative.  You can dress as you wish, but in some settings you may attract special attention if your dress is not conservative.
  5. China remains under the control of a Communist party that tolerates expression of many viewpoints, but not all.  If you plan to express any potentially controversial viewpoint in a public setting, you should give careful consideration to the reaction you may receive.  If in doubt about what may be controversial, consult someone knowledgeable.
