INTRODUCTION
Dear Prospective Student,
Touro Law Center is pleased to announce our sixth summer law
program in Germany. This year’s program, run in cooperation with The University
of Potsdam Law School, is the only American law school summer school in
Potsdam. It will run from May 26 to June 25, 2008. Students will have the
opportunity to explore issues in the areas of mediation as a conflict
resolution process, international criminal law and international law and human
rights.
Since the law school at The University of Potsdam will still be in session
during our program, students will have many opportunities to meet with their
German law student counterparts.
It looks to be a very exciting program. I hope to see you this
summer in Potsdam.

COMPONENTS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL
The summer school will be held at The University of Potsdam. It
will consist of courses, supplemental lectures and tours, including a bus tour
of Berlin, a tour of Ceciliahof where the allies decided how to create a German
democracy in 1945, and an English speaking tour of the German Parliament.
Students can also go on an optional tour of a German concentration camp
One
of the goals of the summer school is to afford participants the opportunity to
better understand how conflicts and gross mistreatment of individuals and
groups arise and develop; and how lawyers and the legal system can protect
these individuals, promote justice and work towards preventing and resolving
disputes in a peaceful way.
WHY POTSDAM/BERLIN?
Both Potsdam and Berlin are cities of major importance in the history of war
and peace. Potsdam is a particularly appropriate city for this summer program
dealing with justice and international law. It is the historic site of the
Potsdam Conference, where in 1945, the allies set up a new system of rule for
Germany aimed at fostering democratic ideals and introducing elective
principles of government.
The city of Potsdam, located across a bridge from Berlin, was the capital of
the Prussian kings. It is famous for its palaces and parks, gardens and villas,
and its many museums.
Berlin is the new capital of Germany and of major importance on the European
and world stage. The city is full of art galleries, great museums, theaters,
music and new architecture. There is an exciting and vibrant night life.
Numerous connections link Potsdam / Berlin to all parts of Europe.
