TOURO LAW CENTER
DEDICATION PLANNED
Senator Charles E. Schumer is Keynote Guest Speaker
for Dedication Ceremony to be held on Sunday, October 21
Central Islip, NY – Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center will celebrate the dedication of its new building on Sunday, October 21 at 3:30 pm. This dedication marks the culmination of a 14-year effort to create a law campus consisting of a law school, federal courthouse and state courthouse working together to enhance the educational experience for law students. All members of the Touro Law community are invited to attend this event.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help make Dean Emeritus Howard Glickstein’s dream a reality and to be the dean of Touro Law Center during this exciting time,” said Dean Lawrence Raful. “By achieving his dream, we have built more than just a beautiful building -- we have built a model law school with unique opportunities and programs for students that take advantage of our relationship with and proximity to the courthouses.”
The ceremony will include a keynote speech by Senator Charles Schumer. Other speakers include Dean Lawrence Raful, Dean Emeritus Howard Glickstein, Touro College President Dr. Bernard Lander, Touro College Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Mark Hasten, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. A champagne reception will follow the ceremony.
Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center moved to the newly constructed
185,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building earlier this year. The building includes two large classrooms, four medium-sized classrooms, three small classrooms, three seminar rooms, two trial courtroom classrooms, two computer labs, a two-level auditorium that can be used as both a trial and appellate courtroom, student study space, a new book store, administrative offices, a café, a multipurpose conference center, alumni boardroom.
The Gould Law Library is three times the size of the former law library with plenty of group study rooms. The infrastructure is high-tech, supporting wireless access, smart podiums and new technology throughout. In addition, the building is home to the William Randolph Hearst Public Advocacy Center, housing 14 furnished offices to local non-profit agencies free of charge. Touro Law students can work with these organizations to gain hands-on legal experience while developing an understanding of the problems facing the local community. The Public Advocacy Center, the only one of its kind in the nation, was included to have an impact on social justice, legal training and the lives of countless individuals.
