Touro Law Center Hosts GEAR UP
Wyandanch High School Students
Visit Law Center as Part of GEAR UP Program
Central Islip, N.Y. – Touro Law Center hosted students from Wyandanch High School as part of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a federally funded project designed to prepare students academically, socially and financially to attend college and plan for their future.
While visiting Touro, high school students were treated to lunch, then heard from Dean Lawrence Raful, Assistant Dean for Admissions George Justice, Professor of Law and Director of Legal Education Access Program (LEAP) Professor Douglas Scherer, and President of the Black Law Students Association Patricia Wright. In addition, Touro students discussed a legal case with the high school students to open their minds to the legal justice system and interest them in various aspects of the law.
“This program is extremely valuable for all of those involved,” said Erica Edwards-O’Neal, Director of Career Services at Touro Law Center and advisory board member for the GEAR UP program. “It is remarkable to see high school students understand a little bit about the legal profession and open up to the possibility of a career in the field. And, the Touro community is truly energized to be a part of this inspiring day.”
