Central Islip, NY – Touro Law Center’s student team won top honors in the 25th Annual Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA) Moot Court Competition. Team members include second-year students Natalia Vassilieva and Brian Picarello. Picarello also won the Honorable Edward J. Hart Award for best oral argument. Special thanks to student coach John Cooney and faculty coach Professor Patricia Rooney.

This year seven teams competed, representing Hofstra Law School, St. John’s Law School, City University of New York (CUNY) Law School and Touro Law Center.

Student teams argued two issues before a panel of judges. The first involved Second Amendment protection and whether an individual has a right to have a handgun in their home. The second issue dealt with the permissibility of limiting a college school student free expression rights. Serving as judges on the Moot Court Bench were Hon. Joseph Covello, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, Second Department; Hon. Steven M. Jaeger, Judge, Nassau County Court; Hon. Andrew M. Engel, Judge, Nassau District Court; NCBA’s Nassau Academy of Law Dean Gail Jacobs, and NCBA President Lance Clarke. Susan Slavin of Littler Mendelson, Melville, chaired the event.
