Touro Law School Helps Form
Hurricane Katrina Task Force
Huntington,
N.Y. – Today, over 50 representatives from area humanitarian
groups, churches and government agencies met at a forum hosted
by Touro Law School. They built alliances and brainstormed ways
to accommodate as many as 200 victims of Hurricane Katrina as
they are expected to arrive in the area this week.
The event was coordinated by La-Keisha
Dandy, a 2004 Touro Law graduate who now heads the Long Island
Minority AIDS Coalition (LIMAC).
Dean
Lawrence Raful and law professor Deborah Post also spoke at the
event, along with Dr. Brian Harper, the Suffolk County
Commissioner of Health Services who is overseeing the transfer
of the victims – flown in from Houston’s Astrodome to a
converted Brunswick Hospital in Amityville.
“This gathering is about mobilizing
our community groups and creating coalitions,” Dandy said.
The group looked not only at housing
issues for the victims, but also helping them integrate into
Long Island life. Also of concern were educational nee ds
for a large portion of the victims who are children. LIMAC can
be reached at 631-225-5500.
