TOURO TEAM
WINS MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Congratulations to 3L PTE John Cooney and 3L FT Rosemary
Garland, Associate Editor-in-Chief of Moot Court, for an
impressive victory in the Nassau Academy of Law Moot Court
Competition, held on March 21, 2007, at the Nassau Bar
Association. The team defeated St. John’s in the semi-finals and
Hofstra in the final round. In addition to garnering first
place, Rose and John also swept the other awards, including Best
Brief, and Best Oralist, won
by Rose. She argued the Sixth Amendment issue of the effective
assistance of counsel. John argued the Eighth Amendment issue of
cruel and unusual punishment. The duo is the first Touro team in
many years to receive the first place award in the Nassau
Competition.
A special thank
you is extended to Moot Court members Liane Colonna and Chris
Wagner who served as coaches for the team during the
competition. Thank you to all the volunteer student mooters,
especially Tom DeLuca and Alison Epilone and also to the faculty
members that gave so generously of their time in helping
to prepare the team for the competition. These include
Professors Arcila, Berman, Hornstein, Melniker, Morris, and
Schweitzer.
Congratulations
also to the second Touro team of 2L PTE students Christian
DuBuche and Erik McKenna for representing the school well as
semi-finalists in the competition. At the conclusion of the
preliminary rounds, the two Touro teams were the only undefeated
ones in the competition. Thanks to Christine Quigley for serving
as Moot Court coach to this second team.
