New Location/New Curriculum
NEW LOCATION
In January 2007, Touro Law Center moved to a new campus in
Central Islip, N.Y.,
adjacent to and working with both a state courthouse and a
federal courthouse. With its unique location as part of the first
planned “law campus” in the country, Touro has become a catalyst
for bringing judges, lawyers and law students together – merging
the classroom and the courtroom.
NEW CURRICULUM
Touro’s visionary approach to legal education includes a
practice-oriented curriculum that teaches students the skills
that employers seek and the profession demands. Building on the
notion of “verticality,” courses introduce progressively more
complex skills to prepare students for practice. At the same
time the school’s excellent faculty ensures there is ample
coverage of doctrinal law.
Similar to the medical school model, Touro students learn to
think critically about the lawyering process from the start of
their education – and each year they add progressively more
sophisticated practice skills.
Innovative programs include:
•
Court Observation Program
–
Students visit arraignment court in their first semester to
experience law in action. In their second semester, students
attend sessions in federal court to see motion practice in civil
cases. Students have the opportunity to both observe and discuss
cases with participating judges and legal counsel. Students come
away with a keen sense of how the legal system works.
•
Practice Modules
–
for second year students, small classes integrate topics in
substantive courses with corresponding practical exercises.
•
Rotations
–
for third year students, rotations provide “hands-on” training
to help students hone essential practice skills. |
