Personal and Network drives

Each user has their own personal network drive storage space. Your ‘Home’ drive is H:. All documents should be saved there. All of the Home drives are stored in a central network location. Under no circumstances should anything be saved to the local machine. Contents of the local machine drives will be deleted periodically. The local machine drive letters are C, D and E. The floppy disk drive is A.

Why you should use your H: Drive

Floppies are prone to failure because they are easily damaged or lost.

You are less likely to lose the contents of your H: drive. They are backed up regularly by IT.

Floppies transport viruses.

You have more space on your H:drive

H: Drive is accessible from any machine you log on to.

The available space on your H: drive is much greater then a floppy disk, however we ask that you regularly delete unneeded files, including email. If your drive gets unusually large you will be notified by the IT Department.

How To Save your  Work:

You may save your personal work straight to your H: drive or your 'My Documents' folder.  'My Documents' is located on the network as well.  We strongly discourage you from using Floppy disks as a means of storage or back up.  There are USB "Key" devices that are very reasonably priced and available at major electronic stores.  We recommend the Sandisk Cruzer line.

When it is time to save your document, most programs such as Word will allow you to choose where to save.. Click on File and then Save or Save As.

Double-click My Computer on the Windows 2000 screen  to view and access your available drives directly.  See Managing your Files
