| The Housing Rights Project is a joint venture of the Law Center and Nassau-Suffolk Law Services, Inc., an organization that provides civil legal services to low-income area residents. The project occupies a "branch office" on the Law Center campus, allowing students a convenient setting to perform pro bono service and to learn the essentials of landlord/tenant law.
Under the supervision of project attorneys, students interview and advise clients on housing rights; gather facts for litigation; conduct legal research; prepare legal pleadings, including answers, motions, orders, applications for injunctive relief, and appeals; and participate in administrative hearings, litigation, and settlement. By performing pro bono service in the Housing Rights Project, students can learn important lawyering skills, become familiar with courtroom procedures and tactics, and develop confidence in their own abilities.
This joint venture has put Touro Law Center at the core of efforts to prevent homelessness in the region and to assure decent, safe, and affordable housing in the community. Students make significant contributions to that effort through
