The Law Students Perspectives Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York offers wonderful programs throughout the year, which are both informative and excellent networking opportunities

All programs are held at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York at 42 W. 44th Street in Manhattan. PRACTICING LAW INSTITUTE ( PLI) offers students the opportunity to attend cutting-edge, practice-oriented seminars on a wide variety of topics including intellectual property, employment and labor law, securities law and more. FEDERAL INTERNSHIPS & HONORS PROGRAMS - Almost every federal agency has a legal department, often referred to as the Office of the General Counsel, which hires law students and recent graduates for summer and permanent positions. Working for a federal agency, either as a summer intern or an attorney, is prestigious and usually an excellent experience. Now you can access extensive application information about most federal agencies in one convenient location.

SPECIAL NOTE: Each agency has its own application deadlines. YOU MUST check each agency’s web site, provided below for your convenience, to verify deadlines and necessary application materials.

Surf the Web and explore opportunities within the legal community:  Are you interested in obtaining a judicial clerkship or some other position within the court system?  Have you ever considered working for the federal, state or local government?  Perhaps you would like to look at a legal newspaper and view the classified ads.  The CSO has added numerous legal career related web sites to its web page at "Links/CSO Resources".

U.S. PATENT BAR EXAMINATION:

Visit PLI's free online lecture series: "Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About the Patent Bar …." by John White. Go to web site: www.pli.edu and follow the link on the left to "Law School Services" – then click on "Student Lounge" and "Free Access to Web Program Segments". You can also go to the patent bar review web site: www.patentbarreview.com for information regarding the patent bar exam.

BAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP: Joining a bar association as a student is an excellent way to begin your entrance into the legal community.  As a member, you will be notified of various events and seminars offered by the bar association.  Most bar associations offer a special discounted membership rate to law students. TOURO LAW CENTER’S LOAN REPAYMENT FUND – Consistent with Touro Law Center’s long standing commitment to public interest law, and to commemorate Dean Glickstein’s 10th anniversary as Dean of the Law Center, a Loan Repayment Assistance Fund has been created. Applicants must work a minimum of 35 hours per week in public interest employment and receive an annual salary of $35,000 or less. Students who are interested in being considered for next year’s grant, should be aware that the deadline is October 1st of each year.

THE PRACTICING LAW INSTITUTE, located at 810 Seventh Ave., New York, NY, offers comprehensive substantive educational programs in all areas of law to attorneys, which are free of charge to law students. The Institute has been certified by the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an accredited provider of continuing legal education.   For more information call 1-800-260-4PLI.

NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL SERVICE: To work as an attorney for New York State, candidates must complete an employment application (Form OC-APP). Once applicants are entered into the state computer system, he/she will be automatically notified of job openings that match his/her qualifications. Minimum Qualifications: As of the date of filing applications, you must be a graduate of an accredited law school with an LL.B. or JD degree and/or be eligible to take the New York State Bar examination. If you are in your senior year at an accredited law school, you may apply no sooner than two months prior to your anticipated graduation. This form can be downloaded from the "state government" link at "CSO resources" on the CSO web site or contact CSO.
