Michelle M. Smith was appointed Clerk of the Superior Court of New Jersey in September 2013, after serving as the Assistant Chief of Court Processing Services for the Superior Court Clerk's Office. As Clerk, Ms. Smith’s primary areas of responsibility include statewide Judiciary records management, foreclosure, statewide judgment liens and policy and planning. Ms. Smith serves on several committees within the Judiciary, including the Advisory Committee on Public Access, the Advisory Committee on Information Technology, Civil Practice Committee and the Enterprise Architecture Advisory Board.
Before joining the Judiciary, Ms. Smith was the Associate Executive Director for Community Mediation Services (CMS), a New York based not-for-profit, that provides conflict resolution and alternative dispute resolution processes for litigants in the court systems. During her tenure at CMS, Ms. Smith served in many roles including a case worker for at-risk adolescents, certified community, special education and family mediator and Director of the New York City Family Mediation Program. Ms. Smith was also certified as a basic and family mediation trainer by the New York Office of Court Administration.
Ms. Smith earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from St. John's University in Jamaica, New York and a Juris Doctor from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Huntington, New York. Ms. Smith serves or has served as an Adjunct Professor at Touro Law Center, Columbia University, New York Institute of Technology and John Jay College teaching courses in conflict resolution and education law to law students, graduate students and undergraduate students.
