Rabbi Reiss to Deliver Jewish Law Institute’s Distinguished Lecture, CLE Credit Available
September 10, 2012Touro Law Center’s Jewish Law Institute welcomes Rabbi Yona Reiss, Dean of Yeshiva University’s affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), on Friday, September 21, 2012, from 9:00 – 11:00 am. Rabbis Reiss will deliver the Jewish Law Institute’s Fall 2012 Distinguished Lecture, “A Comparative Look at Jewish Law and Civil Procedure.” The Lecture is open to the public free of charge. The cost for 2 CLE credits is $25.

Rabbi Reiss is uniquely qualified to address the issues of Jewish law and civil procedure for our students, faculty and the community at large, based on his experience and expertise within both the American legal system and Jewish courts,” said Samuel J. Levine, Professor of Law and Director of the Jewish Law Institute. “The Jewish Law Institute’s primary goal is to consider the relevance of the Jewish legal tradition to American law, legal scholarship, and legal education. Rabbi Reiss will help us explore these issues through his lecture at Touro Law. We are looking forward to an important and informative event.”
In addition to his current position as Dean of RIETS, Rabbi Reiss is an attorney and jurist who served from 1998 to 2008 as Director of the Beth Din of America, the largest rabbinical court in the United States. RIETS is one of the leading centers for Torah learning and training for the rabbinate in the world.
Rabbi Reiss is a summa cum laude graduate of Yeshiva College, YU’s undergraduate liberal arts and sciences college for men, and received his law degree from Yale Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. He served for six years as an Associate at the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. He received his rabbinic ordination from RIETS, where he also earned the distinction of Yadin Yadin, an advanced juridical ordination.
A frequent writer on a variety of topics relating to both Jewish and secular law, Rabbi Reiss has published widely in Jewish publications, as well as the New York Law Journal and Wall Street Journal.
