US Ambassador to the Republic of Niger Bisa Williams to Visit Touro Law
September 24, 2012Touro Law Center is pleased to welcome Bisa Williams, United States Ambassador to Niger, on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Ms. Williams will deliver a lecture on the subject “Challenges Facing Emerging Nations in Africa” immediately following a reception scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
Ambassador Williams is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. She joined the Foreign Service in 1984. Before her appointment as Ambassador to Niger, her overseas postings included Port Louis, Mauritius, Paris, France, Panama City, Panama, Conakry Guinea and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York. She served in the White House as the Director for International Organizations from 2005-2007. Her position prior to her appointment was acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. While in that position she led a delegation to Cuba in 2009 to discuss reestablishing direct mail service to Cuba. Direct mail service to Cuba was suspended in 1963.
Ambassador Williams speaks French, Spanish, and Portuguese. She is a graduate of Yale College and has masters degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles and the National War College of the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
“We are thrilled that Ambassador Williams will be visiting Touro Law Center to talk to our students, faculty, and the community at large,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “In an era of increasing globalization of the practice of law, greater awareness of foreign affairs and cultural sensitivity is important for law students,” Salkin continued. In fact, members of Touro Law Center’s first year class were born in 27 different countries and are fluent in 25 different languages. Earlier this month, Touro Law Center joined the United Nations Academic Impact initiative as a further demonstration of the Law Center’s recognition of the importance of international affairs.
