Panel Discussion and Screening of Crime After Crime at Touro Law

Legal Documentary to be Shown and Discussed on Monday, November 12, 2012

October 24, 2012

On Monday, November 12, 2012, Touro Law Center will host a screening of the multiple award-winning documentary Crime After Crime, followed by a panel discussion with principals of the heartbreaking story the film recounts.

Crime After Crime is about the dramatic legal battle to free Debbie Peagler, a woman imprisoned for over a quarter century due to her connection to the murder of the man who abused her. The film follows the efforts of Joshua Safran and Nadia Costa, two law school classmates and rookie land use lawyers who represented Debbie Peagler pro bono throughout a multi‐year appeal that brought to light long‐lost witnesses, new evidence from the men who actually committed the murder, perjured testimony, and official corruption. Their investigation ultimately attracted global attention to victims of wrongful convictions and domestic violence, and has led to a growing movement for state laws that allow incarcerated survivors of domestic violence to petition the courts for their freedom based on evidence of the abuse they endured. For more on the film, please visit http://crimeaftercrime.com/.

Attorneys Joshua Safran and Nadia Costa, and Natasha Wilson, Debbie Peagler’s daughter, will join us for a pre-screening reception at 6:00 p.m. The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the panel discussion following. The program is free and open to the public.
