Touro Law Center to Host Religious Legal Theory Conference
Conference to be Held at Touro Law from April 10 -12, 2013
April 4, 2013Touro Law Center will host the fourth annual Religious Legal Theory Conference titled “Expanding the Conversation” from April 10 through April 12 at the Law Center. Topics will include: Religion and the Practice of Law, Media Perspectives on Law and Religion, Religion and the Laws of War, among others.
“We are excited to host this conference which will draw from a variety of perspectives, including those of leading legal scholars, theologians, philosophers, and journalists from across the country representing a wide range of disciplines and interests,” said Samuel J. Levine, Professor of Law and Director of the Jewish Law Institute. “We anticipate a fruitful exchange of ideas and perspectives on the relevance of religious thought to law, legal theory, and the role of law in society.”
The opening conference dinner will include welcome addresses by Dean Patricia Salkin and Professor Levine, the conference organizer. Keynote conference speakers include: Kent Greenawalt, University Professor at Columbia Law School; Marie Failinger, Editor of the Journal of Law and Religion; and Geoffrey Miller, Stuyvesant P. Comfort Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Financial Institutions at New York University Law School.
The conference will kick off with the Jewish Law Institute Distinguished Lecture by Oren Gross on Wednesday, April 10 at 12:30. Professor Gross is the Nomura Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School and the Irving Younger Professor of Law and Director for International Legal & Security Studies at the University of Minnesota Law School. His address is titled, “Violating Divine Law: Emergency Measures in Jewish Law.”
The Wednesday events continue with a celebration and cocktail reception marking the 30th anniversary of The Abraham Goldstein and Lillie Goldstein Judaica Collection from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at the Gould Law Library in the law school. This collection includes materials representing Jewish law, history, and philosophy from biblical times to the present day.
