Brett Gilbert Named Director of Alumni Career Services

August 11, 2010

Central Islip, NY – Touro Law Center is pleased to announce that Brett Gilbert has been named the Director of Alumni Career Services. In this new role, he will focus solely on the needs of our growing alumni base, providing individualized counseling to alumni regarding career planning, goals, options and opportunities, and job search strategies.

“Our Office of Career Services has always served both students and alumni,” said Dean Lawrence Raful. “Now we will have one counselor focused directly on alumni needs and placements. I am thrilled Brett will be providing these services for our alumni.”

Gilbert will work exclusively with alumni, reviewing and editing resumes and cover letters, and conducting alumni mock interviews; using e-mail groups and social media to keep alumni up-to-date on current events relevant to their job searches and the legal employment market; conducting surveys of alumni in order to better satisfy their career services needs; and working with other Touro Law Center offices and bar associations to create educational and professional programs and workshops for alumni. Prior to taking on this new position, Gilbert was the Assistant Dean of the Office of Career Services.

“I was ready to give up the reigns as Assistant Dean, but wanted to stay connected to the Touro Law community and provide career counseling and guidance,” said Gilbert. “This position allows me to help our talented alumni with dedicated and expanded career planning services.”

Gilbert received his Bachelor of Science in physics and Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Toledo, and his Juris Doctor from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Immediately after law school, he was a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society, Criminal Appeals Bureau, in New York City. Gilbert then became an associate for noted criminal defense attorney Benjamin Brafman, and thereafter became a partner in the firm of Brafman, Gilbert & Ross. In addition to his ten years with this firm, Gilbert has operated a solo practice and has clerked for the Honorable Marcy L. Kahn, Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, Criminal Term.

Prior to joining Touro Law in 2006, he was an Associate Director of Career Services at Brooklyn Law School for several years, during which time he sat for and passed the registration examination administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Dean Gilbert previously has taught high school and college physics, and he was a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana. He created and maintains the Law Center’s Career Services Office blog and has given presentations about blogging and career services before NALP, the Association of Legal Career Professionals.
