About
The End of Voting Rights is a symposium sponsored by the Touro Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Guest Editor Anthony Farley, James Campbell Matthews Distinguished Professor of Jurisprudence, Albany Law School, invited more than thirty scholars to contribute essays and articles reacting to the recent Supreme Court decision, Shelby County v. Holder. On Thursday - Friday, March 20-21, 2014, many of these scholars will meet at Touro Law Center to discuss the various themes that developed in the papers submitted to the Journal for publication. On Friday, local civil rights lawyers, Frederick Brewington and Randolph McLaughlin will re-enact their closing argument to the jury in a landmark local voting rights case, Goosby v. Town of Hempstead. In the 1997 Goosby case, the U.S. District Court Eastern District of New York found that the town of Hempstead's at-large voting system was racially discriminatory, and had to be replaced with a district system. A preview of an oral history with Touro Law Dean Emeritus Howard Glickstein, former staff attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice in the 1960s and General Counsel and Staff Director of the United States Civil Rights Commission will be shown as well.

How to Get to Touro Law Center
Car
EASTBOUND: Long Island Expressway (I-495) east to Exit 56 (Route 111). Turn right at the first traffic light onto Route 111 south. Bear left onto Wheeler Road (County Road 17) south. Wheeler Road becomes Carleton Avenue. Travel south on Carleton Avenue for approximately 3 miles and turn left into the court complex entrance – Courthouse Drive. Take Courthouse Drive ½ mile to end, turn right, school is on the left.
EASTBOUND: Southern State Parkway east to Exit 43A, Central Islip. Bear right onto Carleton Avenue (County Road 17) north approximately ½ mile and turn right into the court complex entrance – Courthouse Drive. Take Courthouse Drive ½ mile to end, turn right, school is on the left.
WESTBOUND: Sunrise Highway (Route 27) to Carleton Avenue North exit. Bear right onto Carleton Avenue (County Road 17) north. Travel north on Carleton Avenue for approximately 1½miles and turn right into court complex entrance – Courthouse Drive. Take Courthouse Drive ½ mile to end, turn right, school is on the left.
WESTBOUND: Long Island Expressway (I-495) west to Exit 56 (Route 111). Turn left at the first traffic light onto Route 111 south. Immediately bear to the left onto Wheeler Road (County Road 17) south. Wheeler Road (County Road 17) becomes Carleton Avenue. Travel south on Carleton Avenue for approximately 3 miles and turn left into the court complex entrance – Courthouse Drive. Take Courthouse Drive ½ mile to end, turn right, school is on the left.
Train
Eastbound LIRR trains arrive frequently at the Central Islip station, about 2½ miles from the building, with the trip from Penn Station or Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn taking a little more than an hour. Airplane
Touro Law is also convenient to area airports. We are located about 15 minutes from Islip MacArthur, Long Island and an hour from LaGuardia and JFK.
