This course offers perspectives on the American Constitution and American constitutional law through study of the constitutions and court decisions of other constitutional democracies. Subjects considered may include the process of framing the constitution, different approaches to judicial review, separation of powers and the use and abuse of emergency powers. Cases dealing with the protection of rights will be chosen from such areas as freedom of speech and press, religious liberty, privacy and abortion, gender equality, affirmative action and socio-economic rights. (Prerequisite: Constitutional Law I. Satisfies Perspective Requirement.)
