Program on the Israeli Legal System

In 2018, the Jewish Law Institute launched a program on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Israel and the United States, exploring several important areas of the Israeli legal system in comparative perspective. The initiative featured Justice Elyakim Rubinstein, who served as both Attorney General of Israel and Vice President of the Israeli Supreme Court. The program consisted of a series of presentations by Justice Rubinstein, in conversation with prominent communal figures, held throughout the 2018-2019 academic year at various locations in the New York metropolitan area.
The program commenced in 2018 with two October events in Manhattan, the first of which was hosted at the offices of the Proskauer law firm, where Justice Rubinstein provided personal reflections on the historic Camp David Accords, which he helped negotiate. The following evening, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun hosted a conversation between Justice Rubinstein and Judge Michael Mukasey, former Attorney General of the United States. In a December event at the Jewish Center in Manhattan, Justice Rubinstein was joined by acclaimed international human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler, Chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and longtime Member of Parliament

The program continued in March 2019, with an event at Congregation Beth Sholom in Lawrence, New York, where Justice Rubinstein was joined by prominent criminal defense attorney Benjamin Brafman. Finally, in May, Justice Rubinstein made presentations at East Hill Synagogue in Englewood, New Jersey, as well as at Touro College in Manhattan, at an event that was co-sponsored by the ADL.

In the course of the year, Justice Rubinstein also spoke at a number of schools, including Ramaz, DRS, Frisch, SAR, and Lander College for Women, and he delivered the Jewish Law Institute's 2018-2019 Distinguished Lecture at Touro Law Center, where he met with a number of judges, professors, and students, and he served as a guest speaker in Professor Levine's class on Jewish Law. In addition, Justice Rubinstein made a special presentation at a meeting of the Jewish Law Institute Advisory Board, hosted at the offices of the Skadden law firm.
