Touro Law Welcomes New Assistant Dean for Student Services

August 10, 2017

Touro Law Dean Harry Ballan is pleased to announce that Dr. Althea J. Sterling has been appointed Assistant Dean for Student Services.

“Providing our students with the support and guidance they need to be successful was our first priority in finding a qualified candidate for Assistant Dean for Student Services,” stated Dean Ballan. “Dr. Sterling’s background and her enthusiasm will greatly benefit our students and the Touro community. She has a wide range of skills in higher education and I am confident she will make a lasting and positive impact.”

Dr. Sterling earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica, a Masters in Urban Studies from Queens College, CUNY and Doctor of Education degree from Northeastern University. She comes to Touro from Brooklyn College within the City University of New York where she served fourteen years in various roles including, most recently, director of student enrollment advocacy and director of academic testing. In these roles she has provided student services, teaching, academic planning and assessment. She has offered leadership and training for professional and support staff and has worked collaboratively with various departments to improve student engagement and performance. She also collected and analyzed data for strategic planning.

At Touro Law, Dr. Sterling will be responsible for student counseling and academic advising, overseeing more than 30 student organizations and coordinating services for students with disabilities, among other roles. She will also be a member of the law school’s senior management team.

Dr. Sterling stated, “My academic training and professional experience have helped me to develop a strong passion for providing supportive environments for students to succeed academically and thrive socially. I also have extensive experience in collaborating effectively with different constituencies. I look forward to bringing my skills to this position and becoming a member of the Touro family.”
