Touro Law Advances on Veterans Front

Alumni Reunion in November to Recognize Grads Who Have Served
September 5, 2017

The Law Center remains a national leader in service to the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. The Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic continues to represent homeless, sheltered and at-risk veterans with a view towards removing barriers to their reintegration into the community, in areas like landlord-tenant; traffic tickets and driver license restoration; debt; child support modification; and discharge upgrades.

Associate Dean Ken Rosenblum, a decorated U.S. Army Vietnam vet who founded the clinic in 2013, has retired from full-time teaching and administrative responsibilities, and Craig Bruno, a 30-year civil litigator, has taken over as clinic director. Dean Rosenblum remains with Touro, and now devotes his time to developing new initiatives to help improve veterans’ post-service lives. Most recently, he was instrumental in getting Suffolk County to create a first-in-the-nation Veterans Traffic Court, a once-a-month docket exclusively for veterans. In an all-Touro effort, Dean Rosenblum convinced Suffolk Traffic and Parking Violations Agency Executive Director Paul Margiotta, ’00, with studies showing that veterans have a significantly greater incidence of traffic violations and motor vehicle accidents and injuries, often due to their combat experiences. It is now a place, according to Newsday, where “Veterans find justice tempered with mercy” and according to the NY Times, “New Traffic Courts Tries to Keep Veterans on the Road of Return.”

Dean Rosenblum has also persuaded the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York to start a diversion program for veterans charged with relatively minor, non-violent offenses. Modeled on state-level Veterans Treatment Courts, vets can qualify for reduced or dismissed charges by completing an agreed-upon treatment program.

Alumni Reunion to Honor Veteran Grads
This year’s reunion will be held on Veterans Day, Saturday evening, November 11 at The Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills. High on the agenda will be recognition of grads who have served, or are serving, in the military. Please join us to renew acquaintances with classmates and to honor Touro’s heroes. For more information or to RSVP to the reunion, please email alumni@tourolaw.edu.
