Message from Committee Chair
Dear Friends of Touro Law Center,
In 1980, Touro College President Bernard Lander and the Board of Trustees established a new law school. They had a clear vision – an academically rigorous school that would adhere to the College’s mission to serve both the Jewish community and the broader community in its multi-ethnic diversity. The founders envisioned an exceptional institution that included a strong commitment to social justice, reverence for the law and its preeminence in the establishment of a just society, dedication to a tradition of scholarship and academic excellence, sensitivity to ethical concerns, and community outreach for pro bono and public service.
Touro Law Center has achieved the vision of its founders. From 1980 to today, the School has seen great strides in the success of its alumni, the quality of its students and the depth and breadth of its faculty. In the past forty years, Touro Law has established a reputation for quality legal education, innovative programs, institutes and clinics, service to the profession, and commitment to providing responsive legal representation within the community.
Today, as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, we embark on a 40th Anniversary Campaign to raise significant scholarship funding and provide educational opportunities for those students who demonstrate exceptional merit, including those from underrepresented groups. Within the campaign, we have created several new scholarship funds including the Fund for Tomorrow, to recognize the unique needs of passionate, hardworking minority students, women, first generation, and others underrepresented in the profession.
We have also designated specific, affinity gift opportunities for a wide variety of interests. For example, you can designate your gift to a student organization of your choice, support the Women’s Empowerment in the Law Scholarship Fund, the LEAP Scholarship Fund or create scholarships for students active in Law Review, Moot Court, trial teams, the Journal of Race, Gender and Ethnicity, and the SBA.
In sum, you can make a gift directly to the Fund for Tomorrow described above, support student groups with scholarships and programs to enrich the quality of student life on campus, commit to a major gift to create a named scholarship or join our 40th Anniversary Legacy Society. Graduates of the last decade (GOLD) are welcome to make gifts directly to the fund of their choice in any amount that is comfortable within their philanthropic ability. We are excited because, while our gift levels are responsive to a wide-ranging philanthropic prospective base of support including alumni and friends, we expect that when the final gift total is tallied, together we will have raised significant scholarship dollars for the students of today and tomorrow.
We have many exciting events and activities planned to celebrate our 40th Anniversary including virtual class reunions and academic symposiums with free CLE credits, and our virtual Goods & Services Auction. The 40th Anniversary Gala will be held on April 29th and will be the featured event of the year. I look forward to welcoming you to many of these events.
We hope you will be inspired to support today’s students. Our ability to educate those who serve the community ensures our stability and growth. Whatever giving option you choose, I hope you will join me in making an investment in Touro’s 40th Anniversary Campaign. We appreciate your consideration.
Thank You,
Bruce K. Gould ‘84
