In 2000, the Supreme Court of Israel heard an appeal brought by a scholar at Ben Gurion University of the Negev against a rich cartel of Americans aiming to shut down his scholarly pursuits. Except that the defendants tell the opposite story-they had to crack open a closed cartel of academics who had systematically stymied advancement for decades in Dead Sea Scrolls research, led by a Harvard Anti-Semite (despite his nominal appointment by the Israel Antiquities Authority). The resulting donnybrook of litigation reached Biblical proportions.

David Nimmer, commentator on all things copyright, participated in the Israeli proceedings. He brings to bear his scholarly knowledge and insider status, to reveal the true answers to such pressing inquiries as:
  • How did "Rabbi Computer" help a Christian scholar living in Jerusalem crack the code?
  • How does a case so constrained unfold on two continents, involving substantive laws from all over the world?
  • What's protectable anyway about 2,000 year-old scrolls?
  • Why could the wife of the impecunious Ben Gurion Scholar not even afford a winter coat?
