Touro Law Hosting Program for Attorneys Who Want to Teach
September 24, 2015Touro Law Center will host a seminar on Tuesday, October 13 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm titled, “So You Think You Want to Be a Law Professor.” The event is co-sponsored by the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association (LIHBA) and Amistad - the Long Island Black Bar Association.
“Having a diverse faculty with varied professional experience is important to law schools and law students,” said Dean Salkin. “Today, many people who enter full-time law teaching come from a small number of schools who offer advanced preparation for these individuals to enter the job market with the advantage of the time to develop scholarship and scholarly agendas that are appealing to law faculty. This program is designed to level the playing field somewhat for people who may make great and inspiring classroom teachers but have not thought about how to prepare to enter a very different job market,” explained Salkin. “Through this program, Touro Law hopes to encourage practicing lawyers who have been thinking about teaching to pursue the path and inspire others who may not have thought about the idea as a realistic option for them.”
Panelists for the discussion include: Fabio Arcila, Jr., Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship and Professor of Law; Frederick K. Brewington, founding partner at the Law Offices of Frederick K Brewington; Deseriee Kennedy, Professor of Law; and Deborah Post, Professor of Law. The program will be moderated by Touro Law Dean Patricia Salkin.

Cherice P. Vanderhall, President of Amistad stated, “"Law professors are often a lawyer's first mentor in the profession. They set the stage for how we practice, they help to develop that creative and empathic way of thinking necessary to be successful in representing a client's interest, and lastly, they introduce us to the importance of bar associations and affinity groups. My mentor in law school, Prof. Emeritus Beverly McQueary-Smith was President of the National Bar Association from 1998-1999 and a founding member of the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association."
