November 9, 2015Frederick K. Brewington of The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington delivered the Howard Glickstein Civil Rights and Public Policy Lecture at Touro Law Center on November 3.
Dean Patricia Salkin stated, “We are honored to have had leading civil rights attorney Frederick Brewington as our distinguished lecturer. He is an inspirational role model for our students as he consistently takes on challenging cases that promote civil justice in our community.”
The topic of Mr. Brewington’s speech was “Turning Civil Wrongs into Civil Rights.” He gave a broad overview of historic civil rights injustices, and discussed the required societal changes that were needed to address these wrongs perpetrated on people who were and, in many cases, continue to be voiceless and underrepresented. Mr. Brewington also discussed the continuing need for a strong, energetic voice to speak for those who suffer injustice. He gave local examples of how residents in our community fight for justice in housing, in policing and in the administration of justice.
While he maintains a general practice, Mr. Brewington concentrates his practice in the area of civil rights litigation, with a focus on affordable housing, community revitalization efforts, employment, the environment, voting rights and fair representation. His practice also includes criminal defense and personal injury. He is also a popular adjunct faculty member of Touro Law Center and a member of the Law Center’s Board of Governors.
He is a member of the New York and New Jersey Bar Associations, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Nassau County Bar Association and other regional Bar Associations. Mr. Brewington is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey, as well as before the United States Supreme Court, U.S. First and Second Circuit Courts of Appeals, U.S. District Courts of New Jersey and the Eastern, Southern and Northern Districts of New York.
Mr. Brewington graduated with honors from the State University of New York at Albany with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law.
Touro Law Center created the Howard A. Glickstein Civil Rights and Public Policy Lecture in 2009 to honor Dean Emeritus Howard A. Glickstein, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the goals of the civil rights movement and his unwavering commitment to excellence that helped shape the growth of the Law Center.
