Touro Law Announces Landmark AI Graduation Requirement for Incoming Students

Comprehensive curriculum combines online training and interactive seminars to ensure ethical, practice-ready tech competence

Recognizing the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on legal practice, Touro Law Center has launched a comprehensive initiative to train incoming law students in foundational AI literacy, ethical technology use, and responsible workflow integration.  

As part of a new graduation requirement, all incoming students must complete three modules of the Procertas AI Suite, followed by a live, collaborative seminar focused on the practical and ethical dimensions of AI in legal environments.

"Our goal is to ensure our students enter the legal profession not just aware of modern technology, but fully equipped to evaluate and utilize it responsibly," said Dean Elena Langan. "By establishing mandatory AI education, we are setting a clear standard for technical competence and professional ethics in legal education."

The initiative goes beyond technical mechanics to focus heavily on professional duty:
  • Capabilities & Limitations: Teaching students how generative AI operates and where human judgment remains indispensable.
  • Ethical Duties: Reinforcing core obligations regarding competence, client confidentiality, and duty of supervision.
  • Risk Management: Training future attorneys to identify and mitigate risks such as tool overreliance, system hallucinations, and algorithmic bias.
  • Practical Integration: Developing practical strategies for incorporating AI tools efficiently and ethically into everyday legal tasks.
Effective immediately for this year’s incoming class, this mandatory curriculum reinforces Touro Law’s commitment to graduating practice-ready attorneys who are fully prepared for the realities of modern legal practice.

Touro University Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center is located adjacent to both a state and a federal courthouse in Central Islip, New York, has a campus in Manhattan. Touro Law’s proximity to the courthouses, coupled with programming developed to integrate the courtroom into the classroom, provide a one-of-a-kind learning experience for law students, combining a rigorous curriculum taught by expert faculty with a practical courtroom experience. Touro Law is dedicated to providing hands-on learning that enables students to gain experience while offering much-needed legal services in the community.

Touro Law, which has an alumni base of more than 8,000, offers full- and part-time JD programs where students can earn a degree in 3 or 4 years. Additionally, Touro offers a hybrid, four-year FlexTime JD Program at the Long Island and Manhattan campuses and in Fall 2027 the program will be offered in a new campus in Great Falls, Montana. The Flextime Program combines in-person and online learning, requiring students to be in class only on Sundays. Touro Law offers several dual degree programs and graduate law programs for US and foreign law graduates. Touro Law Center is part of Touro University.
