Clinics
Clinics are central to Touro Law's educational approach, teaching students the skills required for effective legal advocacy and helping them develop a methodology for the practice of law. Available to full-time students starting in their second year and part-time students starting in their third year, clinics provide a unique opportunity to engage in critical public interest work on behalf of underrepresented members of our community.
Under the close supervision of experienced professors, clinic students advise actual clients, maintain primary responsibility for all aspects of their cases, and appear on their behalf in court or at administrative hearings.
The Clinical Experience
In addition to providing valuable first-hand experience, clinics help students hone essential professional skills such as interviewing, drafting legal documents, and investigating and developing evidence. For most students, this is their first opportunity to practice law. Because the habits of a professional lifetime begin here, our standards are high. Every case, no matter the size of the issue or the amount in controversy, is handled with the highest level of professionalism, and each client is treated with dignity and respect.
Course Structures & Credits
All clinics combine hands-on casework with a dedicated classroom seminar. Responsibilities vary by credit load:
- 6-Credit Clinics: Require students to complete assignments, prepare for, and participate in a weekly 2-hour seminar, alongside 170 hours of fieldwork/casework over the semester.
- 5-Credit Criminal Clinics: Require students to complete assignments, prepare for, and participate in a weekly 3-hour seminar, alongside 12 hours per week of casework over the semester.
