Congratulations Gregory Desire! Gregory received the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA) Scholarship Award at the 18th Annual Ruth Whitehead Whaley Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, April 28 at the Red Rooster in Harlem. ABWA is a non-profit bar association founded in 1976 whose mission is to promote and support the development and growth of black women attorneys thorugh programs and coummunity outreach. Scholarships are awarded to law students who demonstrate not only financial need but also a commitment to civil rights law and actively participate in community service. Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos visited the Law Center on Thursday, March 1, 2012. He spoke with members of the Business Law Society, stressing the importance of business savvy, writing skills and ethical conduct. Mr. Maragos, elected Nassau’s fiscal watchdog in 2009, oversees the county’s $2.6 billion annual budget.

Congratulations to 3FT James Vartholomeos and 2FT Brett Alazraki, the winners of the Spring 2013 Law Review/Moot Court Student Colloquium Competition. (Shown above left, Moot Court Board Editor-in Chief William Melofchik, Brett Alazraki, James Vartholomeos, Law Review Editor-in-Chief Ara Ayvazian). The winners will present their papers to an audience of faculty, students and guests on Tuesday, April 17, 12:30 p.m., FCR. Mr. Vartholomeos’ paper, “Standards of Liability in High-Speed Police Pursuit Cases: The Failure of New York’s ‘Reckless Disregard’ Standard and the Suitability of the “Shocks the Conscience” Standard in § 1983 Litigation,” reviews the developing law on police liability in high-speed vehicle chases. Mr. Alazraki’s paper, “Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal: Apple v. Samsung and Trade Dress in the Smartphone Era,” examines the ongoing dispute between the two technology giants over the appearance of Samsung’s Galaxy S line of phones.
