Touro Law Receives Bank of America Grant for the Mortgage Foreclosure & Bankruptcy Law Clinic
September 19, 2012The Bank of America has awarded Touro Law Center a grant in the amount of $10,000 to be used to support the Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Law Clinic.
“We are grateful for charitable foundations that support Touro Law Center’s mission to provide practical legal training for students while also providing valuable legal services in the community,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “The Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Law Clinic is in demand among our student body and the community at large, as more and more people are in need of these legal services. I would like to thank the Bank of America for their support on behalf of the entire Touro Law community.”
The Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Law Clinic provides the opportunity for students to work under faculty supervision representing clients facing mortgage foreclosure or the need for personal bankruptcy. Students negotiate mortgage modifications; appear in New York State Supreme Court at Mandatory Foreclosure Settlement Conferences; research and draft litigation documents necessary for foreclosure defenses; assist in the preparation and filing of both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy petitions; and appear at hearings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Students will also interview and counsel clients, investigate facts, review financial records and negotiate on behalf of their clients.
“Our students are gaining hands-on experience while helping members of the community,” said Leif Rubinstein, Director of the Clinic and Associate Professor of Clinical Law. “It’s amazing to see how much impact these students have on the lives of others while learning the law. It’s a great experience for all involved and I hope our clinic will continue to provide these services for years to come.”
