Ken Rosenblum to Head Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic
July 25, 2013Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce Ken Rosenblum has been appointed Visiting Professor and Director of the Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic. Rosenblum has been with Touro Law since 1990 and currently serves as the Law Center’s Associate Dean for Administration.
Dean Salkin stated, “Ken is uniquely qualified to head our Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic. He has a proven record of dedication to both Touro Law students and veteran issues. I am confident that he will do great work and successfully position the clinic as a valuable community resource while providing quality hands-on learning experiences for our students.”
Ken Rosenblum spent five years on active duty as a U.S. Army JAG officer, serving a tour in Vietnam and working as a court-martial prosecutor, war crimes investigator, and military judge. His decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. After military service, he was Deputy Chief of the Suffolk DA’s District Court Bureau; Managing Attorney of the Suffolk County Attorney’s Office; and Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Consumer Affairs, then the nation’s largest local government consumer protection agency. He’s also been a television journalist, working as a reporter and producer/anchor of both a nightly news program and a pioneering effort in the live coverage of criminal trials. He’s been at Touro Law Center since 1990, first as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and International Programs, then for fourteen years as Associate Dean for Student Services, and currently as Associate Dean for Administration. His classroom experience includes a Fulbright Fellowship teaching broadcast journalism in Portugal, and as a Legal Process professor at Touro Law. He is a past chair of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Student Services, and was one of the organizers and is a former Secretary of the AALS Academic Support Section. He’s done volunteer legal work for the Vietnam Veterans of America and is a Veterans Administration accredited attorney. He earned a B.A. in English from Brooklyn College, an LL.B. from Brooklyn Law School and an LL.M. from New York University.
Rosenblum stated, “This is an exciting new chapter in my career at Touro Law that combines my military background with my passion for legal education. I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead in carrying out the soldier’s creed that no comrade is ever left behind. I am excited to work closely with students while providing much needed legal assistance for veterans and servicemembers.”
The purpose of the Clinical Program is to teach skills required for effective advocacy and prepare students for the practice of law. Touro Law offers 8 different clinics, including the Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic. This clinic will assist veterans and current servicemembers in a wide range of matters in which military service has created special protections or particular burdens. Students will represent veterans in educational and medical benefits claims, re-employment, discharge review, housing and employment discrimination, and obtaining accommodations for disabilities. Students may also help servicemembers about to deploy with leases and other contract obligations, work with Nassau and Suffolk County Veterans Courts, and with residents of the Northport VA Hospital's long-term care facility. Students will also participate in community education programs on veterans' rights.
