Touro Law Announces New Clinics to Address Immigration, Criminal Law and Bankruptcy
March 4, 2014Touro Law Center is pleased to announce new and revamped clinical programs that since this fall result in providing twice the amount of clinical offerings for students. New clinics have been created in subject areas including bankruptcy, criminal defense, criminal prosecution, federal prosecution and immigration law. In addition Touro Law’s not-for-profit clinic has been revamped to include a small business component and the Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic has been revitalized this semester. Other clinic offerings include our nationally recognized disaster law clinic, an elder law clinic, the family law clinic, the disabilities law clinic, a foreclosure clinic and a senior citizens program.
“We are committed to enhancing experiential opportunities available for our students. These new clinics combined with changes to our current offerings result in providing more than double the number of clinical opportunities for students,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “I am pleased to offer hands-on experiences in a growing variety of key subject areas to match student interest and passion for current and prospective students with areas of unmet legal needs in our community.”
Touro Law is one of a small number of law schools nationally that guarantees every student a clinic and externship experience for academic credit. We now offer twelve distinct clinics. Clinics are open to all students beginning in their second year, affording students an opportunity to represent actual clients with real legal problems and to work with experienced attorney-professors. Under the close supervision of faculty, clinic students advise clients and appear on their behalf in court or at administrative hearings.
Myra Berman, Associate Dean for Experiential Learning stated, “Our clinical opportunities provide students with the training they need to become practice ready professionals. Our expanded clinical offerings and our intention to develop more clinics will ensure that Touro Law students enter practice having had experience with clients in diverse areas of legal practice and with the professional experience that will make them skilled and confident attorneys.”
In addition to providing valuable first-hand experience, clinics help students hone essential professional skills such as interviewing, drafting legal documents, and investigating and developing evidence.
“The expansion of our clinical programs will serve not only our students but also our community,” said Leif Rubinstein, Director of Clinical Programs. Our clinics are known throughout the community for providing much needed quality legal assistance to individuals and families who would otherwise not have access to such help. These new clinics will provide assistance for a new group of residents in need while also providing training in a wider range of legal subject areas for our students.”
