Touro Law Receives Grant from New York State Office of the Attorney General
Money to Fund Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Clinic at Touro Law Center and Efforts of Central Islip Civic Council
June 28, 2012Touro Law is pleased to announce that we have been selected as one of ten state-wide grantees for a new foreclosure prevention grant program designed to help homeowners avoid foreclosure. Touro Law was awarded $97,000 from the State of New York Office of the Attorney General. A portion of the money will be sub-contracted to the Central Islip Civic Association for their local work to help with mortgage foreclosure issues. The majority of the grant will go to the Mortgage Foreclosure clinic at Touro Law, lead by Professor Leif Rubenstein, for its delivery of legal services in Long Island to help at risk homeowners avoid foreclosure.
“We are so pleased to be a recipient of this grant,” said Dean Lawrence Raful. “It is great to be recognized and rewarded for the important work that we have been doing. This new grant will ensure that we can continue this work, which benefits both law students and community members.”
The Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Clinic seeks to assist local residents who are victims of the economic downturn. Students, working under the supervision of an expert attorney-professor, represent clients facing mortgage foreclosure or the need for personal bankruptcy. They negotiate mortgage modifications; appear in New York State Supreme Court at Mandatory Foreclosure Settlement Conferences. In representing clients facing foreclosure, students will learn the substantive and procedural law of mortgage foreclosure, the provisions of homeowner and consumer protection legislation, the various federal and state programs assisting homeowners and the skills of drafting, interviewing, counseling and negotiation.
