Professor Deseriee Kennedy Named Kermit Gitenstein Distinguished Professor of Health Law & Policy

Touro Law Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce that Professor Deseriee Kennedy has been named the Kermit Gitenstein Distinguished Professor of Health Law & Policy for the 2014-2015 academic year. In her role she will teach a Health Law and Policy class and lecture in the area while building relationships within the community to further strengthen Touro Law’s programs and collaborations.

“Professor Kennedy is an excellent teacher and outstanding scholar who brings energy and enthusiasm to the growth of Touro Law’s health law initiatives,” said Dean Salkin. “I am confident that her perspectives and interests will enhance our health law and policy offerings as well as our inter-collegiate collaborations. I look forward to her contributions.”

Before starting her career in legal education, Professor Kennedy was a commercial litigator at a private law firm in Los Angeles, and an Assistant City Solicitor in Philadelphia, PA. She was on the faculty at the University of Tennessee College of Law for 12 years before joining Touro Law’s faculty in 2007. She teaches courses in family violence family law, and civil procedure. Professor Kennedy is a member of the board of directors of the Safe Space LI, a nonprofit agency that works with victims of domestic or dating abuse, child abuse, and rape and sexual assault.. She is the co-author of the treatise, New York Law of Domestic Violence, 3rd edition which is published by Thomson Reuters.  Her scholarship has been published in The Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics, Arizona State Law Journal, Missouri Law Review, The Southern California Review of Law and Women’s Studies, The Journal of Race, Gender and Class, the William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law, Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law, & Justice, and the Cardozo Journal of Law & Gender among other journals. 

Professor Kennedy stated, “Law schools, like Touro Law, can play an important role in training lawyers who can help advance universal quality, affordable health care, the public health, and fostering collaborations between legal practitioners and health care disciplines. I am deeply honored to continue the efforts of Touro Law's first Gitenstein Chair, Edward Dauer, in nurturing connections with the wider Touro and health law communities.”

The Kermit Gitenstein Visiting Fellow was established at Touro Law in 2013 through a $1 million gift from the Kermit Gitenstein Foundation. Touro Law has developed a curricular program in Health Law and Policy and is in the process of advancing new collaborative initiatives with New York Medical College, also a part of Touro College and University System.
