Touro Law Names New Director of Digital Legal Education

Professor Jack Graves to Oversee Digital Lawyering Curriculum and Content

March 23, 2015

Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce that Professor Jack Graves has been appointed Director of Digital Legal Education. In his new role, Professor Graves will oversee the development of Touro Law’s new digital lawyering curriculum, while simultaneously working with faculty to expand and improve our ability to deliver educational content online through a virtual classroom experience.

“Jack is dedicated to legal education and passionate about finding ways to ensure that today’s educational experience uses cutting-edge technology to enhance the delivery of information and the student experience,” said Dean Salkin. "He is also working on new curricular content in the rapidly developing world of technology-leveraged lawyering. These combined interests coupled with his commitment to Touro Law will benefit the entire Touro community.”

Professor Graves teaches Contracts, Business Organizations, Arbitration and International Sales Law & Arbitration, as well as new courses in basic business principles for law students and 21st Century lawyering. In collaboration with a group of colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Zagreb, Professor Graves founded and continues to serve as Director of the Institute of International Commercial Law & Dispute Resolution. He also spends significant time collaborating with students and faculty from the U.S. and abroad in relation to the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (largely, today, in online pre-moots), an international moot involving law student teams from over 250 law schools and over 60 countries. He co-chairs Touro Law’s New Technologies Committee.

Touro College Vice President of Online Education and Dean of the Lander College for Women Marian Stolkes-Loike stated, “Education is being reshaped by technology. Touro College and University systems is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art opportunities for our students. Touro Law Center’s commitment to digital educational and lawyering demonstrates this commitment and will positively influence how information is delivered as well as content and curriculum.”

Touro Law Center already offers a number of "virtual" or online courses in its JD program, as well as its new online Portal to Law School program to begin this spring. Professor Graves is currently teaching the Law Center's first "digital lawyering" course online this spring--"21st Century Law Practice by Design: Leveraging Legal Expertise with Technology for More Cost-Effective Delivery of Legal Services." This survey course will be offered online this summer as well, and additional offerings are planned for next fall and spring.
