Samuel Levine Joins Touro Law Center Faculty

September 29, 2010

Central Islip, NY – Touro Law Center is pleased to announce that Samuel Levine has joined the faculty as Professor of Law and Director of the Jewish Law Institute.

“We are thrilled that Professor Levine has joined the Touro Law family,” said Dean Lawrence Raful. “I am confident that his teaching, scholarship and leadership are a perfect match for our law school. I look forward to working with him in the coming years.”

Prior to joining the Touro Law community, Professor Levine was a member of the faculty of Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California from 2002-2010. He has also been a Visiting Professor of Law at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, a Research Professor of Law at St. John’s University School of Law, and a clerk for judges David N. Edelstein and Loretta A. Preska in the United States District Court, Southern District of New York. Professor Levine has published more than forty articles in the areas of legal ethics, criminal law, law and religion, Jewish law, and constitutional law. His scholarship has appeared in leading law reviews, in textbooks and anthologies, has been included in course adoptions in the United States and Israel, and has been cited by courts in the United States and New Zealand.

Touro’s Jewish Law Institute is dedicated to research and scholarship in Jewish law, and to teaching the relevance of the Jewish legal tradition to Anglo-American law. As Director, Professor Levine aspires to bring together scholars, teachers, and lawyers, while providing a clearinghouse for new ideas and innovative research. His goal is to make the Jewish legal tradition an active force in legal scholarship, and to encourage the teaching of Jewish law, through Touro Law’s extensive Judaica Collection, including the Lillie Goldstein Traveling Library, a collection of more than 400 titles in over 700 volumes in Hebrew and/or English, available for loan to law schools to support a Jewish law course.

Professor Levine received his B.A., cum laude, from Yeshiva University, his J.D., cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law; a rabbinical ordination from Yeshiva University; and an LL.M., with highest honors, from Columbia University School of Law.
