Copyright Permission Requests

Compliance with federal copyright laws is an important consideration when distributing photocopies, making course packets, or posting materials on an online course management system, such as LexisNexis Web Courses or Westlaw’s TWEN. The staff of the law school’s Faculty Services Center is responsible for requesting most copyright permissions through the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Please contact a Faculty Services Center staff member for assistance with CCC forms at (631) 761-7003.
In unusual copyright situations, the staff of the Faculty Services Center may consult reference librarians for assistance with obtaining copyright permission through CCC or directly through publishers and authors.*
To learn more about copyright guidelines for academics, please feel free to contact the Reference Office for assistance in locating appropriate websites, books, and articles that explain the intricacies of academic copyright permissions and fair use.
To help with FAQ's about copyright permissions in the context of choosing your course materials and how you will copy and distribute them to your students, the library has created a Copyright Permission Request Report and a Top 10 FAQ's Cheat Sheet.
*Summer abroad materials permissions can be particularly tricky. For Summer abroad course permission requests contact Irene McDermott.
