Dean Salkin Names New Director of Externships and Employer Relations

May 19, 2014

Touro Law Dean Patricia Salkin has named Margarett Williams the new Director of Externship Programs and Employer Relations. Margarett’s new role will be effective as of June 2014 and a search to find an Assistant Dean of Career Services will commence shortly thereafter.

Dean Salkin stated, “Beginning this fall, all incoming students will be required to enroll in a clinic and encouraged to participate in an externship program prior to graduation. Margarett will be responsible for the growth and expansion of our externship program while also serving as a liaison to firms and agencies throughout the region as part of the employer relations component of the Office. I am confident that this dual position will create many synergies to benefit our students.”

Margarett joined the Touro Law staff in 2007 serving as the Director of Employer Relations and later as the Assistant Dean of the Office of Career Services. She spent nearly 17 years in corporate Human Resources and Training. She practiced employment law and family law prior to joining Touro Law Center. Williams has given presentations on resumes and provided counsel on job searches at the Association for the Bar of the City of New York. She has been also been recognized for her pro bono efforts by the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations, and she serves on the Executive Committee of the Alexander Hamilton Inn of Court.

Associate Dean for Experiential Learning Myra Berman stated, “Margarett’s connections to the legal and business communities, both regionally and nationally, will provide great opportunities for our students. Her diverse knowledge of the corporate world, academia, and private law practice provide her with a meaningful understanding of employers’ needs and will enable her to meet those needs with qualified Touro Law students interested in gaining hands-on experiences in real-world settings.”

Touro Law Center’s Externship Program allows students to earn academic credit while gaining work experience through field placement programs in both civil and criminal areas of practice at law firms of all sizes, government offices, administrative agencies, and public interest organizations. Our externship placements provide our students with the opportunity for real world engagement where they can apply and evaluate what they are learning in the classroom and begin to develop the lawyering skills required for competent, ethical and successful law practice. Externships are an essential step in the journey from law student to legal professional. Every Touro Law student is guaranteed an externship experience for academic credit. All of our externship programs have two components: classroom hours, devoted to issues of professionalism, and 140 hours of field placement. The Externship courses are Civil Externships (encompassing areas that include business law and technology, immigration law, corporate law, intellectual property, labor and employment law, matrimonial law, trusts and estates, litigation), Criminal Law Externships (prosecution and defense) and Judicial Externships (federal and state).
