Students in this course will assist high school student volunteers who, serving in roles of legal professionals, conduct weekly hearings of nonviolent teen offenders and impose sentences upon those offenders. Students will assist the Nassau County Assistant District Attorneys in conducting intakes through the Adolescent Diversion Court and the Family Court, frequently accepting cases that will ultimately be handled by the Youth Court. The goal of Youth Court is to replace the traditional criminal court processes, with interventions that educate and prevent further encounters with the system. Successful completion of the class will satisfy the 50 hour pro bono requirement. The class will satisfy 4 credits towards the experiential component of the criminal law concentration. The class may satisfy the AWR requirement. An additional 3 hours per week of office time is required. All classes/field time are in Hempstead, NY. (No prerequisite.)
