Law and AI - LAWN775

3 Credits

The law and, by extension, lawyers can alter the trajectory of artificial intelligence (AI) development. Regulators around the world have discussed different legal frameworks to limit the magnitude and likelihood of risks presented by AI. Lawyers will play a major part in drafting and interpreting these efforts and current students will oversee the amendment and alteration of any enacted frameworks. This course begins by exposing students to the basic technical features of advanced AI systems. We then discuss the variety of ways in which AI advances may challenge and disrupt existing legal and political institutions. These include threats to democracy, the risk of totalitarianism, challenges to the international order and national security, and even the threat of human extinction. We then examine proposed legislative and regulatory approaches to address these risks. We close by examining the role that AI might play in law and governance in the future. (AWR Option)
