Current Issues in Racism and the Law - LAWN916

In this course, we will look at contemporary challenges in our criminal justice system, employment, educational, and other systems. We will discuss the present and past roles the law plays in both subordination and promotion of the rights of people of color in America. Those electing to take this class should understand that this class continually examines how the law has distributed power and how power has been used to privilege some and marginalize and/or oppress others. This course seeks to develop your critical thinking and writing skills. We will examine recent events, textbook cases, and scholarly articles for our understanding, in an effort to assist you in deepening your understanding of these issues. We will identify the incremental changes as well as the backlash to present day movements. Our focus will be: what is the right course of action to achieve racial justice?
