In Memoriam: Howard Stein
In Memoriam: Howard Stein
It is with a profound sense of sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Howard Stein—a cherished member of the Law Center, an inspiring teacher, a selfless mentor, and a legendary friend to Touro. To say his loss is immeasurable is an understatement; Howie was, in every sense, a pillar of our community.
A giant in the legal profession, Howie began his illustrious career at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP in 1979, ultimately serving as Managing Partner and Co-Chair of the Real Estate Law Group. Throughout his decades of practice, he was a trusted strategist and counselor, mastering complex real estate transactions and shaping developments that transformed our regional landscape.
Yet, for all his professional success, Howie’s dedication to Touro was unmatched. As Chair of the Touro Law Center Board of Governors from 2005 to 2022, he didn't just witness the law school’s history—he actively shaped it. In 2011, he was inducted into the Inaugural Class of the Touro Law Center’s Builders Society. His leadership was instrumental during the monumental capital campaign that funded our Central Islip campus, and years later, he lent his immense expertise to help consolidate our Bay Shore and Central Islip campuses.
Howie believed deeply in the power of legal education. For many years, he was found in the classroom as an adjunct professor, generously sharing his real-world wisdom with generations of aspiring attorneys.
Additionally, his advocacy extended beyond the classroom and the boardroom, helping to lead fundraising efforts for student scholarships. Not only did he rally others to support scholarships, but he led by example to generously establish scholarships in his own name.
Howie will be remembered most for the vibrant spirit he brought into every room and the dedication he brought to every project. He was a larger-than-life presence, defined as much by his tireless work ethic and extraordinary generosity as he was by his unforgettable laughter and warmth.
In addition to his career at Certilman Balin and his work at Touro, Howie volunteered at several nonprofit organizations, lending his time and expertise to worthy causes including, the Association for a Better Long Island, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Vision Long Island, and others.
Howie did not just serve Touro; he loved Touro, and we loved him in return. His impact on the trajectory of Touro Law is etched into the very fabric of our institution and the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to work alongside him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
