Touro Law Receives $25K Grant from the United Way of Long Island
March 19, 2014Touro Law Center Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce a $25,000 grant from the United Way of Long Island’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Program. The grant will be used to provide funding for consultation with victims of Hurricane Sandy both at the law school and through regularly scheduled walk-in clinics held throughout the Long Island region.
“Our Disaster Relief clinic has been instrumental to more than 2,000 families trying to put their lives together after the storm while providing hands-on training for law students who have a desire to help within the community. We are so grateful to the United Way for their support of our efforts and their shared dedication to Long Islanders in need,” said Dean Patricia Salkin.
Touro Law began a Sandy assistance hotline three days after the storm, followed by the creation of the Disaster Relief Clinic nearly three months afterward to address longer-term legal needs. To date, we have assisted more than 2,000 Sandy-affected households, predominantly seniors and working families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Sandy-related legal needs have ranged from FEMA’s disaster assistance program, flood and homeowner insurance, landlord-tenant disputes, real property and estate issues, and contractor disputes.
While our primary focus has been on vulnerable populations of Long Island, Touro Law has also developed programs, built and strengthened collaborations, and sought policy reforms meant to benefit the region as whole. As the legal needs for many of these households continue, Touro Law is strategically placed to advance innovative solutions through its collaborations with legal and social services providers, while playing a central role as the only law school with a Public Advocacy Center housing several public interest law groups and a clinical program alongside the state and federal courts when judicial relief is necessary.
The United Way grant comes through the United Way Worldwide Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund. United Way is committed to collaborating with and supporting Long Island’s community-based organizations as they serve the disaster recovery needs of Hurricane Sandy affected families and individuals across Long Island.
