The inaugural gathering featured a panel of esteemed judges who shared their invaluable insights and perspectives on the essential elements of effective trial advocacy. The panel was moderated by Hon. Andrew A. Crecca, District Administrative Judge, 10th Judicial District. Speakers included Hon. Joseph F. Bianco, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; Hon. Mark D. Cohen (Ret.), Touro Distinguished Jurist in Residence; Hon. Jeffrey A. Goodstein, Supervising Judge of the Supreme Court, 10th Judicial District, Nassau County; Hon. Cheryl A. The comprehensive program addressed critical aspects of courtroom practice, including opening statements, direct and cross-examination techniques, expert testimony, strategic trial planning, and compelling summations. Attendees gained practical knowledge from seasoned jurists who brought decades of courtroom experience to their presentations.
"This event perfectly captured our vision for the Trial Advocacy Institute," said Dean Elena B. Langan. "The passionate response from our community and the caliber of expertise shared by our distinguished panelists has established an inspiring foundation for the important work ahead."
The Trial Advocacy Institute at Touro Law Center was developed to create an innovative educational experience that benefits the students at Touro Law Center, as well as those who litigate in the courts on Long Island and beyond. The Institute is multi-faceted, offering many advantages including a concentration in trial advocacy that trains Touro Law students in advanced trial advocacy skills and provides support for students in Trial Competitions, as well as actively working with members of the local bench and bar; presenting lectures/CLE programs on topics of interest to litigators; offering trial training programs to students, graduates, and members of the legal community. The Institute intends in the future to serve as a resource for students and lawyers, providing videos, transcripts, and writings from trials and trial programs to assist in trial preparation.
Touro’s Trial Advocacy Institute’s Advisory Board which consists of outstanding judges and litigators, provides the wisdom that only highly respected jurists and litigators can offer. In addition, the Institute’s Mentors Circle, comprised of Touro Law Center graduates who are successful litigators, relate to and work with Touro’s trial students providing mentorship and networking opportunities.
Professor Lynne A. Kramer, who serves as the Director of the Institute, stated, “The Trial Advocacy Institute aims to bridge the gap between academic legal education and real-world courtroom practice, offering students and practicing attorney’s opportunities to refine their advocacy skills under the guidance of experienced legal professionals.” She continued, “We are fortunate to have such wonderful working relationships with our District Administrative Judge, Andrew Crecca, and members of the bench and the bar. I am confident that we will continue to do great work together for the benefit of not only Touro Law students but for members of the greater legal community as well.”
