This course explores Jewish Law in the Supreme Court of Israel. The course begins with a broad introduction to the sources and structure of the Jewish legal system, followed by an introductory study of the role and place of Jewish law in the legal system of the State of Israel and the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Israel. The rest of the course addresses the impact of Jewish law on several substantive areas of the Israeli legal system. Course materials include important Supreme Court opinions and leading scholarly commentary. There are no prerequisites for this course, and students are not expected to have any prior knowledge of Jewish law or Israeli law.
